I want to share some poems I’ve written over the years about the Lake District. Many of them were jotted into a notebook while I was there; between days spent bagging Wainwrights and nights sleeping under the stars, watching nature’s beauty.
I’m going to start with a poem I wrote in fairly inclement weather conditions, but I saw the beauty in the situation and channelled it into this poem. About an Explorer daydreaming under the canvas, getting soaked!
Explorer
An un-creased sheet below satin skies
A bold explorer shuts their eyes
He dreams of adventure and daring fate
Explorers know that they must wait
Jungle heat and polar ice
Jagged rock and sacrifice
All things gone and long off times
Heroic tales in forgotten minds
It all starts here in the mind’s eye
Where the soul laughs, thinks and cries
May you dream big, don’t look behind you
And may these words forever guide you

Reflection
I think this poem is about trusting your gut feelings and having the courage to venture outside your comfort zone. The Explorer is not just the man in the poem but a metaphor for you; for your passion, your dream, or the quiet idea that keeps returning when everything else is dead silent. It speaks to that moment where imagination takes over, where the mind wanders far beyond the wet ground and the beating rain above, and begins to open up.
This really does start in the mind’s eye; dreaming is part of the process. It is in these moments, lying still and listening to yourself
At its heart, the poem reflects the emotional journey that comes with chasing a goal. There is uncertainty, patience, and sacrifice, but also hope and small wins along the way. It suggests that every path begins in the mind’s eye, shaped by thoughts, feelings, and quiet drive.
Progress does not always go straight forward, but allowing yourself to imagine what lies ahead and trusting the path you have chosen guides your steps forward and keeps your mind true.
